EXPERIENCE
Director
of Academic Computing for Emory College, November 2000-present
- Provide direction
to the College Administration on trends in information technology, including
advanced networking, mobile computing, purchasing trends, classroom audio-visual
technologies, the web, and faculty use of IT.
- Conceptualize computing
environment for College faculty and staff and work to make that environment
a reality.
- Act as technology
advisor to all College construction projects, including networking infrastructure.
- Conduct annual desktop
replacement for primary faculty/staff machines and computer classrooms
(350 machines). Negotiate with vendors on pricing.
- Manage the College's
overall web presence, including overseeing an initiative to redo all College
departmental sites. Analyze web statistics to prioritize allocation of

- Strategize with faculty
and college staff on directions for academic technology within the College.
- Oversee desktop replacement
process of 200 computers per year for College faculty.
- Consult on classroom
design for renovated and new buildings. Work with faculty to ascertain
their needs. Help coordinate renovations and installations with facilities
and audio-visual personnel.

- Assist humanities
faculty in all aspects of using technology in teaching and research. Technologies
include digital video and audio, telephony- and IP-based videoconferencing,
file servers, LearnLink and other conferencing applications, web-based
courseware like WebCT and Blackboard, and general web-related technologies.
- Help faculty
incorporate technology into particular classes. Provide assistance with
designing technology-based assignments and syllabi. Lecture on Internet
and Web history and culture. Teach HTML and image editing.
- Help faculty
to conceptualize and write proposals to the Instructional Computing Development
Fund. Manage the grant once funded. Act as liaison to other ITD personnel
to complete the grant's goals. Research and purchase hardware and software.
- Committee
work: Emory University Architecture Standards Team, 1997-1999 (local support/
desktop representative); White Hall Classroom Renovation Committee, 1998-1999
(faculty liaison; presentation technology specialist); Language Center
Committee, 1999 (computer-assisted instruction specialist).
- Manage the
Foreign Language Computing Lab. Survey faculty on software and hardware
needs. Purchase appropriate software and hardware. Coordinate lab hours
and staffing. Train staff.
- Act as liaison
to the Emory Center for Interactive Teaching (ECIT). Coordinate undergraduate
and graduate classes using ECIT including those in Arabic, Broadcast Journalism,
Chemistry, Roman History, Public Scholarship, and Visual Culture. See:

- Survey faculty
on their classroom needs both general and technological. Work with Media
Services personnel to provide audio/visual and computer presentation capabilities
in classrooms. Help strategize upgrades to classroom technologies.
- Coordinate
with library staff to provide faculty with access to on-line research
tools. With library selectors and reference librarians, provide hands-on
training (both individual and group) to faculty and graduate students
on on-line databases and EndNote.

- Performed
desktop technical support to faculty and staff. Installed appropriate
hardware and software for Macintosh and Windows computers. Provided assistance
with learning software. Ordered hardware and software. Primary support
for the Journalism lab/classroom.
Co-Technical
Director and Webmaster, The Virtual Prometheus Unplugged? Romanticisms Past
and Future, Emory University, 1995-1996
- Co-directed
the cyber-companion to a live conference held at Emory University in April,
1996. The virtual conference met during the next month in the EmoryMOO
and used a new program, Juggler, which provides a Web/MOO interface.
- Tested Juggler
for Macintosh and Windows; wrote on-line and text help for Juggler.

- Designed
from ground-up technical communications class on authoring for the Web.
- Used Internet
technologies to develop a workshop class format, increasing students'
responsibility for their own learning.
